Dee Edington, PhD

D.W. Edington is a Professor in the Division of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan, Director of the Health Management Research Center, a Research Scientist in the School of Public Health and a frequent faculty member of the Michigan Business School's Executive Education Program. In addition to his research and teaching, he has 25 years experience in academic administration.

Trained in mathematics, kinesiology and biochemistry, Dr. Edington received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University and completed his M.S. at Florida State University. He completed his post doctoral work at the University of Toronto and taught at the University of Massachusetts before coming to Michigan in 1976.

Dr. Edington's research focuses on the precursors of disease and the relationships between healthy lifestyles, vitality and quality of life; which benefit both individuals and their employer organizations. His specialty interest is in how individual health promotion, worksite wellness activities and programs within managed care organizations impact health care cost containment, productivity, and human resource development. He is the author or co-author of over 450 articles, presentations and several books, including Biology of Physical Activity, Biological Awareness, Frontiers of Exercise Biology, and The One Minute Manager Gets Fit.

The Health Management Research Center's Health Risk Appraisal has been completed by over 2.5 million individuals. The concepts and materials from the Center have influenced health promotion and wellness programs in over 1,000 corporate worksites. Current research is concentrated on twenty organizations and over 2 million persons who have been in the HMRC database up to 17 years. These longitudinal studies continue to provide leading edge research learning opportunities.

Rich Little is the Executive Director of Cooper Ventures, the consulting and fitness management division, and has assisted hundreds of organizations throughout the United States and abroad. Rich joined the world-renowned Cooper Aerobics Center team in August 1991, first, with the Cooper Institute, managing a comprehensive worksite wellness program in Richardson, TX and then with the Cooper Fitness Center, to develop one of the most successful personal training programs in the nation, generating over $1.8 million in revenue. Rich has more than 16 years in the health and fitness industry and includes corporate, clinical, commercial, and residential settings. Mary Kay Cosmetics, Chick-fil-A, Nokia, Nortel Networks, Duke Center for Living, Medical Center of Delaware, Princeton Longevity Center, St. Francis Medical Center of Tyler, and the United States Navy and Marine Corps are among the many clients he has worked with in the areas of needs assessments, strategic program planning and implementation, worksite health promotion integration, preventive medicine, feasibility studies, facility design, equipment selection, program evaluation, and overall facility operations and management.

Rich earned his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin and his graduate degree from the University of North Texas, also in Kinesiology with an emphasis in health promotion and fitness management.

His presentations include such topics as exceptional customer service, effective leadership, health and wellness on the road, successful club operations, exercise and diabetes, fitness facility design, profit centers in the club setting, and successful worksite wellness programs.

Robin F. Foust, BS, PAHM
Health Management Specialist and Consultant

Robin Foust, an award-winning health scientist and architect, has developed successful health management programs implemented across the country. National recognition includes a C. Everett Koop Award for disease management, a leadership award for her work in wellness, and a leadership award in the field of health and human performance. She is also well-known for her work in women's health and pediatrics and pay for performance.

Through implementation of programs developed or selected by Robin, her clients have documented optimal healthcare and financial outcomes in the areas of health and human performance, disability, disease/condition management, and maternal and child health. Most recently, Robin's work combining meaningful policy revision with obesity and weight management programs has garnered a great deal of attention for achieved outcomes.

In addition to national recognition for successful healthcare outcomes, Robin is a published author, a thought leader in healthcare; and a well-known, highly rated speaker on various healthcare topics. Robin works with health plans, disease and helath management organizations, employers, Medicare, and Medicaid populations; to both manage the health and human performance (productivity) of their covered populations and to seek solutions to rising healthcare costs. Her work includes the design of promising reward healthcare, or pay for performance reimbursement models that are considered a viable solution to our nation's healthcare dilemma. Clients typically receive results that exceed return on investment (ROI) and return on outcomes (ROO) expectations.

With a backgroud in behavior change and health education, Robin is a respected faculty member of the Institute for HealthCare Communication. The Institute trains clinicians to use communication techniques or integration of these techniques into systems of care in order to facilitate desired behavior change for optimal outcomes in patient satisfaction, and health status. Ms. Foust also co-chairs the business and industry committee for the SC statewide initiative on obesity management referred to as SCCOPE.

Robin has worked with a variety of organizations including, but not limited to: Princeton University, The University of South Carolina, Medical College of Georgia, Vanguard Health Systems, MediCorp Health System, HealthEast, Palmetto Health System, Washoe Health System, Spartanburg Regional Hospital System, GHS, and so forth; DC Consortium, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Boddie-Noell Enterprises, State of Delaware, City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, CenterPoint Energy, Sara Lee Corporation, Lyondell Equistar, etc.; various disease management and wellness organizations, the P4P Forum, WebMD (WellMed), Matria, FutureHealth, ActivHealth, HMC, Gordian, Healthgram, MITA, InterxVent, Click4Care, CareContinuum, etc.; various health plans - WellPoint, UHC (Senior Ovations), etc.; physician practices - United Physicians, Mary Black Hospital Physician Network, etc.; and others.

R. Patrick Devereux, PharmD

Doctor Patrick Devereux is a lecturer and project manager for the Institute for Wellness and Education in Woodstock, Georgia. His work with the Institute includes nationwide lecturing on the topics of diabetes care and Medicare Part D for pharmacists. He also works on initiatives such as the diabetes intensive management program with employers in the Atlanta area. Patrick is currently a pharmacist educator with the American Pharmacists Association Ten City Challenge with Diabetes in Dalton Georgia and works as a community pharmacist in Marietta and Woodstock Georgia. Patrick received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and is currently enrolled in the post-graduate community pharmacy residency program with Mercer University School of Pharmacy in Atlanta.

James N. Astuto
Consultant, Formerly Regional Healthcare Manager, Verizon Communications, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia

Until April 2006, Jim Astuto was the Regional Healthcare Manager for Verizon Communications, Inc. in Atlanta, GA. In that position he was responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of Verizon's healthcare cost management strategy for union, non-union and retired employees throughout the southeast and Midwest. That included evaluating healthcare delivery systems in the region with regard to cost, customer service, patient satisfaction, access, quality of care and contracting with those organizations that deliver high quality care in a cost effecitve manner. In addition to those duties, he was also responsible for the management of Verizon's $700 million pharmacy benefit carve-out program that is administered by Medco Health Solutions. Additionally, he is the Chairman of the Georgia Healthcare Leadership Council, and Atalnta-based organization that is composed of major health plans and employers, and is dedicated to improving the quality, efficiency and safety of healthcare for all Georgians. He was also Vice-Chairman of the Tampa Bay Employer's Health Coalition (EHC), Inc.

Prior to Verizon, Mr. Astuto was the Manager, Benefits Development for Contel Corporation, which merged with GTE in 1991. His primary focus at Contel was the design, implementation and measurement of Contel's healthcare cost containment strategies. Before joining Contel Corporation in 1988, Mr. Astuto was the Manager, Group Insurance Benefits in the Risk Management Department at the World Headquarters of the H. J. Heinz Company. In that position, he was responsible for the effective cost management and optimum financing of employee benefit plan expenditures.

Mr. Astuto is a graduate of Penn State University and Point Park College, where he earned degrees in Accounting and Computer Science.
